Does anyone have any idea when/if another DP Archive will be coming out? How many there will be? What issues will be included in what volume?

Thanks

No official word yet - typically there's at least a 2-year interval unless a series is "fast-tracked" like All-Star or Plastic Man.

Just to whet your appetite, here's a mock-preview I wrote for DStepp's upcoming survey:

Doom Patrol Archives Volume 2
Written by Arnold Drake, Art by Bruno Premiani and Bob Brown. Cover by Bob Brown.

Reprinting The Doom Patrol 90-97 (205 pages of content)

Continuing the adventures of the World's Strangest Heroes, this volume includes the first appearance of Steve Dayton, a.k.a. Mento, who allies himself with the team in his romantic pursuit of Elasti-Girl! The group also battles the alien Gargaux and his army of androids, and continues to fight off their arch-enemies the Brotherhood of Evil, including a now Elastic-powered Madame Rouge! Then, in a climactic 2-part finale, the Doom Patrol faces their greatest challenge yet: The Brotherhood of Evil, General Immortus, and Gargaux team up to enslave the world, and the team must journey to the four corners of the globe, and ultimately, to the dark side of the moon, in order to save the earth!

And to answer your other question, it will take 5 volumes to Archive the initial '60s run, but I'd have to find my notes to give you a volume-by-volume breakdown later if I get a chance.

OK - here's how it will probably go (page content = cover + story)

Vol. 2 - DP 90-97 (205 pgs.)
Vol. 3 - DP 98-101, Challs 48, DP 102, B&B 65, DP 103 (204 pgs.) (includes the Challs/DP cross-over and the Flash/DP team-up)
Vol. 4 - DP 104-112 (223 pgs.)
Vol. 5 - DP 113-121 (224 pgs.)

Here's a dilemma - I would love to have the back-up solo adventures each grouped together in a volume, but it just doesn't work algebraically:
Robotman - DP 100,101,103,105
Negative Man - DP 106,107,109,111
Beast Boy - DP 112-115

Unless they do some serious cutting and pasting to manipulate the back-up stories, we'll have to live with the Robotman and Beast Boy series overlapping volumes.

What about the Teen Titans appearance?
Issue 5 or 6. Shouldn't that be in there, or is it too insignificant?

Back the old duplcating stories in archives argument. Number ones for Teen Titans Archives and Brave & Bold Team-Ups Archives are both good bets for the next year or so and I, for one, would rather not have stories from those also appearing in future Doom Patrol volumes.

It's the curse of the crossovers! It's unavoidable that there will be duplicates, as that is the only way for complete stories to be collected in their respective books. I won't be buying the Titans or B&B archives, so it's not a issue for me.

Osgood:

As for the the back up stories, why can't they be all be collected in their own Archive edition? I would think DC would love to squeeze another $50. out of us by issuing them in a single book. Are there enough pages to fill a volume?

IIRC, Beast Boy appears in TT#6, but the rest of the DP have just a cameo - I don't think it warrants inclusion.

As for the B&B issue - although not done by the regular team (I think it was Haney/Giordano IIRC?) it reads like a DP story guest-starring the Flash, and also had the final appearance of General Immortus (in the '60s anyway) so I think it should be included.

We also discussed at length on another thread that if the Flash/DP team-up makes it into the DP Archives, it leaves 9 "homeless" non-Batman B&B team-ups that can be neatly scooped into a volume, thus avoiding any duplication.

Here's the link to that thread:

I think by including the 2 back-ups in volume 1, they've already tipped their hand that they will be included in the remaining volumes.

DP did extremely well in this year's Archives Survey.
And it did very well in advance orders, too.
If it's a good seller in reorders (and it would astound me if it isn't), then I imagine we'll see a volume in 2004, or even late 2003.

Osgood, I'd try and work those backup stories into the regular Doom Patrol Archives if I were doing the mapping. Mr. Greenberger commented recently that they shoot for a page range of 224-240 pages per Archive. I notice that many of the mapping threads tend to come in lighter than that. I'd bump up the page totals if possible, particularly with Silver Age material. This may (hopefully) leave enough room to include those backups stories in the Archives that include the original issues in which they appeared.

And it's great to see how well Doom Patrol did in the survey (and, apparently, in sales), isn't it? I continue to hope this series will be fast-tracked. It wouldn't take too long to finish off.

Just to clarify - I did include the back-up stories in the mapping. The dilemma is that the solo tales, from what I can recall, were serialized stories filling in the gaps on the respective origins of Robotman and Beast Boy. The Robotman back-ups in particular were phenomenal - some of Drake's best work on the series IMO. It would be great to somehow manipulate the sequence to get each of them into a single volume, but it would take some major reshuffling.

Sorry I misunderstood, Osgood. Going back and rereading it now, I see what you're saying. By now I should know enough to defer to you masters when it comes to these mapping threads!

I haven't read these back-ups so I'm a bit in the dark as to how they'd read if they were broken up. It sure seems to me that we're much more likely to get them if they're included as part of "Doom Patrol Archives" than if we wait for a Robotman or (snicker) Beast Boy Archives, so we'll probably have to live with the stories split up. That might not be too bad, though, if D.P. is fast-tracked and we get subsequent volumes fairly quickly.

Also, if the Robotman backup springs off a Golden Age origin story (I don't know) it'd be nice to see that GA story thrown in somewhere as well.

How about this?

DOOM PATROL ARCHIVES vol. 1 : My Greatest Adventure #80-85, Doom Patrol v1 #86-89.

DOOM PATROL ARCHIVES vol. 2 : Doom Patrol v1 #90-98. (230 pgs + intro)

DOOM PATROL ARCHIVES vol. 3 : Doom Patrol v1 #99-101, Challengers #48, Doom Patrol v1 #102-105, Brave And Bold #65. (226 pgs + intro)

DOOM PATROL ARCHIVES vol. 4 : Doom Patrol v1 #106-114. (220 pgs + intro)

DOOM PATROL ARCHIVES vol. 5 : Doom Patrol v1 #115-121, covers of Doom Patrol v1 #122-124, Showcase #94-96. (224 pgs + intro)

I moved B&B #65 from just before Rita's wedding and honeymoon in #104-105 to just after, so as to not split up the Robotman back-up issues. This weekend I will verify whether B&B #65 contradicts her recent marital status or not.

Also, according to the GCD, the Beast Boy back-up in #115 is a separate storyline from those in #112-114, hence the split between volumes 4 and 5. However, I need to physically verify this also.

The Showcase issues add up to 54 pages. If they are omitted, then volume 5 can be released in the new slimmer $40 format. I prefer that they be included because it explains to current readers of the Doom Patrol, who may pick up these volumes, exactly how Robotman survived.

OK, I checked my back issues. It's pretty obvious that Rita is not yet married in B&B #65, so it should be printed before DP #104. Also, even though the Beast Boy back-up in #115 continues recounting tales of Gar's childhood, it is not imperative for #115 to appear with those in #112-114.

The final breakdown is:

DOOM PATROL ARCHIVES vol. 1 : My Greatest Adventure #80-85, Doom Patrol v1 #86-89.

DOOM PATROL ARCHIVES vol. 2 : Doom Patrol v1 #90-98. (230 pgs + intro)

DOOM PATROL ARCHIVES vol. 3 : Doom Patrol v1 #99-101, Challengers #48, Doom Patrol v1 #102-103, Brave And Bold #65, Doom Patrol v1 #104-105. (226 pgs + intro)

DOOM PATROL ARCHIVES vol. 4 : Doom Patrol v1 #106-114. (220 pgs + intro)

DOOM PATROL ARCHIVES vol. 5 : Doom Patrol v1 #115-121, covers of Doom Patrol v1 #122-124, Showcase #94-96. (224 pgs + intro)

I'm torn whether or not I want the B&B Doom Patrol/Flash story in the DP Archives. I'm still hoping that the "Misc teamups" between B&B 150-164 could be pulled together into an Archive, or TPB.

The eight stories would fit perfectly in 1 volume.

(if the 2 Batman teamups are held til a 2nd "all-Batman volume," Canary/Starman have already been collected, and Metamorpho/Teen Titans are saved for their possible collections).

Of the 224-240 pages, how many pages does one have to allow for the intros, etc?

I recently asked Bob the same question. He said between 8-12 pages, depending on the needs of the particular volume. I've been assuming 8: title page, indica page, 2-page table of contents, 2-page intro, 2 pages of bios

As people who've encountered me in this forum before will already know, I am voraciously awaiting more DP Archives. Altho I'll take them in any form I can get 'em, I gotta admit I'm pretty anal about how I'd prefer the to be collected. It's sorta a variation on All or Nothing, you could say. Either I'd want NOTHING outside of the pages of My Greatest Adventure/The Doom Patrol to appear in the Archives, to preserve the Haney/Drake/Premiani/Brown integrity of the work -- or else I'd want ALL the Silver Age appearances of the team to be included, to be exhausted, to encapsulate, represent the entirety of their Silver Age history.

The former would mean no CotU, no TB&tB, no TT. That would make some of the people who don't want duplication to occur happy. The latter would mean CotU, TB&B and even TT. This would have the adverse effect, of course. I myself don't care about duplication, since I don't buy most of the Archives by any means. I don't know that I'd get a TB&tB Archive, or a TB&tB "misc." Archive; and after over a decade of Archives, DC doesn't seem terribly interested in getting the original Titans series Archived. Further, I simply don't care if I have to buy a few duplicate stories, in some cases, if it helps me to get books that chronicle the entirety of a character's or team's history within a certain era. I just don't, myself.

I jump back and forth between which All or Nothing choice I prefer. I really think MGA/TDP is a special series, and I absolutely believe that the fact that only a few cooks were adding to the pot, with their vision for the series, was a BIG part of that. I'd love to see that very effect represented in these Archives. I think it would make for a grand reading experience. But I'm also SO enticed by the possibility of owning, in a relatively brief Archives series (as opposed to monsters like JLA, Legion and especially Batman and Superman, which could go on forever), the ENTIRETY of this beloved group's SA "life."

The Challengers of the Unknown story needs to be there, because it's a real crossover. It's the middle part of a three-part story which starts in DP 101 and ends in DP 102. The other two (B&TB & TT) aren't as crucial.

Bill,

I know about the crossover, but -- and I know that I'm probably in a vast, VAST minority with this -- often I feel that retaining the effect of a consistent creator's/creative team's vision on a title is actually more important the getting the full plot/action itself. That's just me, but, to me, The Doom Patrol, ultimately was more the result of the work of Haney/Drake/Premiani/Brown than it was the sum total of the actual stories in which they appeared. I mean, the only other creators (aside from letterers, colorists, editors) who worked at all on the series proper were Joe Orlando and Jack Sparling, contributing a cover a piece... I think.

Hence my divisive but anal outlook on collecting these Archives. If I were in control, and being pressured to include the Challengers material for the sake of the crossover narrative, then I'd include all the rest, too.

Oh, another thing I forgot to mention about my anal approach -- I would want the material to be reprinted in purely chronological order. This would mean all the back-ups get printed right after the lead that they originally followed. Even tho this means the stories they tell get busted up between volumes and you have to wait a year or two for the latter part/s. It'll be worth the wait.

Howdya keep a fanboy in suspense...?
